Before 2008, Eben Alexander defended the classical view that consciousness and emotions depend entirely on the brain. Discussions about the afterlife left him indifferent.
Everything changed one morning in 2008 when a severe headache led to his emergency admission to a hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. Tests revealed a rare bacterial meningitis, caused by E. coli , which was literally paralyzing his brain. Eben fell into a deep coma and was declared a vegetative state, with virtually no chance of survival.
Seven days in a deep coma: an out-of-body experience
For seven days, Eben Alexander lived through an experience that neither he nor his colleagues could explain. Upon waking, he recounted:
"I was there, outside my body..."
He described white and pink clouds against a blue and black sky, populated by "translucent beings" bathed in an inexplicable light. These beings, which he called "higher modes of existence," emanated a profound, almost tangible joy. According to him, this experience was more real than his earthly life and could not simply be a figment of his imagination.
