I gave my jacket to a homeless woman — two weeks later, a velvet box changed my life

I thought I would experience an ordinary morning, punctuated by the biting January cold and the routine of the office. Nothing suggested that this simple journey would shatter everything I thought I knew about success, generosity… and luck.

An almost automatic gesture, on a freezing morning

She was sitting right in front of the glass doors of our building, her back against the cold marble, as if the stone could somehow steal a little less heat from her. The wind swept across the avenue, and I clutched my scarf, searching my pockets. Nothing. Not a single coin.

When she gently asked me if I had any change, my first response was like everyone else's: "Sorry." Then I noticed her trembling hands, her thin sweater, the absence of a coat. And above all, her gaze. Not pleading. Just clear-sighted.

It was freezing cold. And I was going to wait for the bus anyway.

Without thinking twice, I took off my jacket.
