I realized then what was happening.

I wasn’t part of their story anymore.

Later, a colleague informed me that Dalton had even consulted a lawyer about adverse possession—a legal method of claiming ownership of property.

My brother wasn’t just living in the house.

He was researching how to take it from me.

The Wedding Invitation That Never Came

When Dalton’s wedding invitations went out, I didn’t receive one.

When I confronted him, he replied:

“The guest list is tight. Don’t make this about you.”

I reminded him the wedding was happening in my house.

His response stunned me.

“It’s been my house for years.”

When I called my father, he dismissed me.

“I gave it to him,” he said. “Just let your brother be happy.”

That’s when I finally understood something important.

My resilience had never impressed my father.

It had simply made me easy to exploit.

The Decision

I contacted an attorney.

He confirmed what I already suspected:

Legally, my brother had no claim to the property.

So I listed the house for sale.
