Researchers at the University of Kent have explored an intriguing hypothesis: could our brain unconsciously detect certain molecules linked to the biological transformations of the body?
Psychologist Arnaud Wisman and his team conducted experiments with a substance called putrescine, which is naturally produced during certain bodily processes. Participants exposed to this odor, without knowing what it was, exhibited specific emotional reactions, often associated with mild discomfort or heightened alertness.
An important point: the volunteers did not consciously link the event to a specific danger. It seemed that their unconscious mind reacted first.
Intuition or simple biological sensitivity?
Does this mean the body “knows” everything in advance? Not exactly. Researchers suggest a biological sensitivity. Our bodies constantly pick up minute pieces of information: hormonal variations, physiological changes, imperceptible odors.
The brain analyzes this data at a remarkable speed. What we call "intuition" could sometimes be the result of these micro-signals being integrated without our conscious awareness.
It's comparable to the feeling that a storm is approaching even before you see the clouds: the air changes, the atmospheric pressure evolves, and our body registers it.
The powerful link between emotions and smells
