I raised my late partner's daughter, but on the day of the big celebration, she announced her departure.

For years, we were a team of two. I ran a small shoe repair shop in the city center, a modest but stable job. She grew up, did her homework at the counter, waited for me after school, and we had dinner together every night.

We had our traditions, our jokes, our habits. Christmas, for example, was our special time: she made the mashed potatoes, and I cooked the turkey using Elise's recipe. It was our way of keeping her memory alive.

Everything seemed solid, stable, obvious. Until that fateful Christmas dinner when everything changed.

The revelation that changes everything

In the middle of the meal, Chloé stopped eating and told me she needed to talk to me. She had found her biological father. He had written to her, explained his mistakes and regrets, and wanted to meet her.

But above all, he had promised her something that I could not give her: answers about her mother, about her past, about her story.

For me, the shock was immense. For ten years, I had done everything for her. I had raised her, protected her, loved her like my own daughter. And suddenly, I was afraid that all of that would disappear.

However, I didn't forbid him from seeing it. Because loving someone also means letting them search for their own answers.
