The doctor called my parents to tell them I might not survive the night, but they chose to stay and toast my sister's promotion...

Before leaving, I wrote a note and left it on the bed:

Mom, Dad,

By the time you read this, I will no longer be here.

I know they came because they ran out of money. They won't get another penny from me. I never want to see them again.

For me, this is over.

—Teresa

They arrived later.

Too late.

As usual.

A week later, there was a knock on my apartment door.

Demanding. Angry.

"How dare you?" my mother shouted.

"We are your parents!" my father shouted.

"We just want to understand," Emily said gently.

I stayed behind the door and said:

—They chose a dinner party instead of my life.

Silence.

Then excuses.

Then denial.

Then, the truth finally came out of Emily's mouth:

“You didn’t die, so everything turned out alright, right?”

At that moment, something inside me froze completely.

Cold.

Clear.

Definitive.

I didn't open the door.

I didn't argue anymore.

I just said:

“Go away.”

And for the first time in my life…

They left.

I went away for a while. I rested. I recovered.

When I returned, I built something different.

A quieter life.

A simpler life.

But one that finally belonged to me.

A year later, I bought my first apartment.

It wasn't perfect.

It wasn't luxurious.

But it was mine.

Completely mine.

Sometimes people ask me if it hurts… to cut ties with family like that.

And I remember that hospital bed.

The phone call.

To the voice of my mother, who prefers to toast to the beating of my heart.

And I know the truth:

I did not abandon my family.

They abandoned me first.

I simply stopped chasing them.
